PV = nRT

Common Mistakes

  • Using °C directly in PV = nRT. Convert to K first; this calculator does so automatically.
  • Entering gauge pressure instead of absolute pressure. Add atmospheric pressure when the problem gives a gauge reading.
  • Mixing pressure and volume units with an unmatched value of R. This calculator converts every accepted unit to SI before calculation.
  • Treating a real gas as ideal near condensation or at high pressure.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Supported scope: one equilibrium state of a nonreacting, approximately ideal gas. The calculator solves only P, V, n, or T and does not model gas identity, mixtures/partial pressures, humidity, reactions, phase changes, compressibility factors, or fugacity.
  • The calculation uses R = 8.31446261815324 Pa·m³·mol⁻¹·K⁻¹ internally. Displayed values use up to eight significant digits; report experimental answers with appropriate significant figures.
